History

Barton Library was founded in 1958 when Union County Library, located in the courthouse, and El Dorado City Library, at Elm and Jackson Streets, merged. Colonel T. H. Barton donated the building. Barton Library is supported by the citizens of Union County through property taxes and contributions.

MON - WED - FRI: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

TUE - AND - THUR: 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM

SAT: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Policies

Library cards are free, but a photo I.D. and a proof of residence is required. Printed checks and/or recent bills to a current address are acceptable. Parent/Guardian must accompany children under 14 who are getting a card. The parent information is what the library needs for childrens cards. Most materials are checked out for 28 days and are renewable for 1 week. Special materials are checked out as follows:

Not renewable: Videos, Magazines

Specific titles not available at Barton Library may be ordered through Inter-Library Loan for a fee of $3.00 per item.

A 24-hour book drop is located in front of the library.

All internet users must sign a Patron Use policy. Photo ID required. Parent/Guardian must sign for youth under 18. Parent must stay with youth under 15 using the internet. Patrons under 17 must use the computers in the youth/children sections.

Replacement Card - $1.00

Copies - Copier, Computer and Micro film: .10 per page

Lost Books - Replacement Cost

Overdues - .10 per day to a maximum of $5.00 per item.

Interlibrary Loan - $3.00 per item.

Fax Copies - $1.00 per page to send.

Friends of Barton Library is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to promote and support Barton Library. Membership is open to anyone interested in helping the library grow.

In the past FOBL has sponsored new programs, donated equipment, and increased public awareness of library services.
